Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal called himself a 'fakir' on Wednesday while campaigning in Varanasi. The AAP convenor was trying to garner the sympathy of the people in his characteristic style when he repeatedly said, "I am a fakir."
The AAP convenor while trying to strike a chord with the people of Varanasi said, "I have only Rs. 500 in my pocket."
On the surface Kejriwal's claim sounds to be a nice vote gathering election slogan. But in reality the 'fakir' from New Delhi is a crorepati politician.
A look into Kejriwal's affidavit declaring his assets while filing the nominations presents a completely different picture. The former Delhi chief minister has Rs. 4,25,085 in his SBI account. Kejriwal's wife Sunita has declared her movable assets to be valued at Rs. 17,41,583.
Besides the 'fakir' Kejriwal has immovable assets valued at around Rs. 92 lakh. And his wife Sunita has immovable assets to the tune of Rs. 1 crore.
Kejriwal's movable and immovable assets is considerable but it's no big thing as the AAP chief has a B. Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur and he had also served as IRS official. Also, Sunita Kejriwal is a government official. So the Kejiwals are justified in having assets to the tune of over 2 crores.
According to Dr Vishwanath Pandey, former BHU official, the fact that Kejriwal is trying to fool people of Kashi by calling himself a fakir is objectionable.
