Pakistan's ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who is currently on trial for treason, narrowly escaped yet another assassination attempt today, after a bomb that was planted on Musharraf's route, under a bridge, went off shortly before his convoy arrived. No one was injured. Nobody claimed any responsibility for the attack.

"Four kilograms of explosive device planted in a pipeline under a bridge exploded around 20 minutes before the former president was supposed to cross the spot," senior police official Liaqat Niazi said.

The former president, who is currently put up at an army hospital, was driven home via an alternative route.

Musharraf, who was the prime minister of Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, returned to fight the general elections, but was barred from participating and charged with a series of legal cases including treason.

The Taliban has vowed to annihilate him, and security concerns have prevented him from appearing at all but two of his treason hearings.

This was the fourth attempt to kill him. The first three attempts took place in his office.
