Concerned over the rising cases of crime against women in India, the Supreme Court on Monday announced that it wants a ban on all porn-sites in India, especially those featuring children.
The announcement comes after Internet giant Google decided to pull out all child-porn related content from its search engine yesterday.
The apex court issued an appeal to the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) to take required actions in this regard. A bench led by Justice B.S. Chauhan has asked the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to file its response within 21 days.
The decision comes in response to the petition filed by advocate Kamlesh Vaswani who said that pornographic sites should be banned in India as it is deemed as one of the leading factors behind attrocities against women in the country. While watching porn is no offense, watching child porn is a crime and the law extends to "whoever creates text or digital images, collects, seeks, browses, downloads'' child porn.
"The absence of Internet laws encourages people to watch porn videos and over 20 crore videos or clippings are freely available in the market, which have been directly downloaded from the Internet or copied from video CDs," the petition stated.
The Centre had previously sought time from SC to block international porn sites. It would be interesting to see how Centre responds to the apex court plea this time.
