It's true! People who eat slowly and drink more water in course of meal are less likely to wolf down their meal and pile on extra weight.

Chewing down up to the last morsel of food is likely to make you feel fuller fast and make you consume less. Result, less calorie pile on - lesser weight gain! Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow swear by this and so does the researchers now.

Researchers from Texas Christian University delved deeper into the relationship between mindful eating and calorie intake and emerged with startling findings.

The researchers found that people who ate slowly consumed, on average, 88 fewer calories than the fast eaters. Overweight people, on the other hand, ate only 58 fewer calories on average. Slow eaters also drank more water while eating which enhanced feelings of fullness and prevented over-eating.

'The higher water intake during the slow eating condition probably caused stomach distention and may have affected food consumption.Slowing the speed of eating may help to lower energy intake and suppress hunger levels and may even enhance the enjoyment of a meal,' says Professor Meena Shah.

This study was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
