Brazilian President to Visit India as a Chief Guest for the Republic Day

Brazillian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro will arrive in New Delhi on Friday for a four-day visit, primarily to attend the 71st Republic day celebrations as the chief guest and also to explore ways for boosting the trade ties at a time both the large economies are hit by slowdowns.

President Bolsonaro will be accompanied by seven ministers, besides the chairman of Brazil- India Friendship Group in Brazilian Parliament, top officials and a large business delegation in his first visit to India after assuming power.

The External Affairs Ministry stated that the President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro will be paying a four day visit to India from January 24 to January 27 as a response to the invitation by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bolsonaro is said to meet President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday in his visit to India and would hold talks with Modi, states the foreign ministry. The Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also call on the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The last presidential visit from Brazil was in October 2016 by President Michel Temer has come to India for attending the eighth summit of Brazil- Russia- India- South Africa (BRICS) leaders in Goa.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Brasilia in November for attending the XI BRICS summit in November.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs or MEA, the President Bolsonaro is said to address a group of business leaders of India and Brazil on January 21 at the India- Brazil Business Forum.

The ties between India and Brazil have been on an upswing in the last few years as the volume of the bilateral trade was USD 8.2 billion in 2018-19. both the governments feel that there exists a huge potential for enhancing the bilateral trade further.

the investments of India in Brazil were around USD 6 billion and the investments of Brazil in India are estimated to be around USD 1 billion in 2018.

The major exports from India to Brazil include agro- chemicals, synthetic yarns, auto components and parts, pharmaceuticals and petroleum products where as the imports of India from Brazil include crude oil, vegetable oil, sugar and bulk minerals and ores.

India and Brazil are also strong contenders for permanent me4mbership of the UN Security Council.

The Ministry Of External Affairs has said that the relations of India and Brazil are not just strong at the bilateral levels but also at plurilateral fora like BRICS, IBSA, G-20 and in multilateral bodies with specifically UN.
