List of 98 smart cities released by Government

On Thursday, Government has released a list of 98 smart cities. The cities, which are to be developed as smart cities, are maximum in number from UP, followed by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. List that was unveiled by Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu includes 24 state capitals.

The smart cities list include 13 cities from UP, 12 cities from Tamil Nadu, 10 cities from Maharashtra, 7 cities from MP, 3 each from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. A total of 24 states would be selected in the first year to be developed into smart cities.

During to occasion, Venkaiah Naidu said, that the "prime motive behind the smart city project is to enhance urban life."

"The smart city mission is very practical and realistic. We need public's participation," Naidu added.

"Smart cities need smart people, we need people's co-operation to move forward in our mission.”

Features of a smart city:

  • Promoting mixed land use in area-based developments

  • Housing and inclusiveness

  • Creating walkable localities

  • Preserving and developing open spaces

  • Promoting various transport options

  • Making governance citizen friendly and cost effective

  • Giving identity to the city

  • Applying smart solutions
