A Toofan van carrying 23 people of a family hit a divider and fell into Dhawaleshwaram barrage, the accident has killed 22 persons in the vehicle. The deadly mishap probably took place in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased persons were returning from Tirumal after offering prayers to Lord Sri Venkateshwara Swamy and Goddess Sri Kanakadurga mata in Vijayawada to their native place Atchutapuram village in Visakhapatnam district.

Due to overspeeding the vehicle hit the road divider on the Dhavaleshwaram Barrage bridge and fell into the river. 21 people reportedly killed before the police and rescuers from the neighbouring area arrived the spot and a girl was dead after joining her in a hospital in Rajahmundry. The lone survivor, 13-year-old Kiran is getting treatment in hospital.

Among the victims, nine women and seven children were also there. The tragic incident has killed members/relatives of one family.
