Senior Journalist Gauri Lankesh Shot Dead In Bengaluru

Gauri Lankesh, a senior Journalist and activist in Bengaluru, was shot dead outside her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on Tuesday evening. Police said that her body was found on porch of her home in West Bengaluru.

Lankesh just reached home and was about to enter when an unidentified men shot her from a close range; three bullets hit her, one on the forehead. A total of seven bullets were fired at her out of which three hit her, two in her chest area and one in her Forehead.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that three police teams have been formed to investigate the murder of Gauri Lankesh and the culprits must be caught.

Gauri was elder daughter of P Lankesh- a man who brought in a new brand of Kannada journalism. She followed in his foot steps, always speaking her mind. She was running her own Kannada paper. Her views were considered as Leftist and anti-hindutva. She worked for communal harmony.

She ran a weekly “Gauri Lankesh Patrike” a Kannada tabloid. In 2016 November, she had been found guilty of defamation in a case involving BJP MP Parhlad Joshi and had been sentenced six months jail, she was out on bail.

This incident has caused outrage on Twitter, many people and groups have condemned her death.

Kerela C.M Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted: “Shocked to hear that the brave journalist-activist has been shot dead in Bengaluru. Culprits should be nabbed at the earliest”.  

“Shocking and blood curling to hear about the murder of Gauri lankesh. These monstrous criminals must be nailed n dealt with sternly” tweeted Biocon’s Chairman Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.

Union Home Ministry also sought a detailed explanation from Karnataka Government on this Incident. Several Protests erupted across the state condemning her murder.

The US embassy condemned the death of senior journalist on Wednesday.

Embassy in a statement said, “The US mission in India joins advocates and press freedom in India and world wide in condemning the murder of respected journalist Gauri Lankesh in Benguluru”.

We offer our sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, it stated.
