Lionel Messi may visit Singapore soon

According to recent reports, Singapore is hoping to welcome Barcelona star player ‘Lionel Messi’ and Argentina to the National Stadium this summer.

The media reports are telling that negotiations are underway for the international friendly match between Argentina and Singapore in the first week of June.

The Lions have a home 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Chinese Taipei on June 13, so the game against the FIFA World Cup runners-up could conceivably happen a few days prior to that.

International friendly matches have been designated in the first part of the June by FIFA, ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, which will begin on June 17th.

The Argentinean International team is also due to play a friendly match against former Confederation cup champions Brazil in Australia in June, reportedly the match will held on the world’s largest cricket ground at the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCG).

Lionel Messi returned to represent his national team after retiring from international football after Argentina lost to Chile in Copa America final in June 2016, where Messi failed to score in the penalty shootout.

The Singapore Sports Hub has come under criticism for struggling to attract high-class football events over the past couple of years.

The last time Singapore hosted a high-class Football event was two years back, they hosted the 2015 Barclays Asia Trophy, which attracted premier league clubs like Arsenal, Everton and Stoke City.

In 2014, Brazil faced Japan in a friendly, and a Singapore XI played Juventus one of the most famous Italian clubs in an exhibition match.

Lionel Messi is a record five-time Ballon d'Or winner; he will turn 30 this June. He has earned 115 caps since making his international debut for the senior national as an 18-year-old against Hungary in the year 2005.
