An Indian-Canadian Sikh has been elected as the new Chief of the Canadian Police of the Peel region. This is the third largest municipal police force of the country.
Amrik Singh Ahluwalia was appointed as the new head of the Peel Police Services Board of Ontario, on Friday. Linda Jeffrey, mayor of the Brampton City and Bonnie Crombie, mayor of the Mississauga city, also supported Mr. Ahluwalia.
The Newly elected chief said after the unanimous vote, that, "my first thoughts are, what a wonderful country we live in.” He added that, he had arrived in the country years ago "with USD 7 in my pocket."
Mr. Ahluwalia said that, "I am honored, this is a great responsibility, I take with humility and with a sense of purpose, that I want to do my very best.”
"I will do my best to serve the public and serve the police force. The men and women in the force who, day in and day out do such an exemplary job," he said.
The Provisional Government had first appointed Ahluwalia to the board in February, 2011 and he was reappointed in April, 2014, for the second term.
Previously, Mr. Ahluwalia worked as the President of the Sikh Society Calgary. He serves as the volunteer of the Seva Food Bank in Mississauga and several youth camps had been organized by him.
The Police of the Peel region is the third largest municipal police force of the Canada. The Peel Regional Police is responsible for the regional crime prevention and law enforcement, provision of the effective and adequate police services.
