A survey of Muslim women revealed that in 6 out of 10 cases women were given divorce by their husbands unilaterally. In almost all cases the divorce that was one-sided were informed to woman by her relatives or through sms or the local Qazi or e-mail. A previous study by the NGO Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) revealed that 92% of Muslim women were against triple talaq.

According to present survey that was conducted on 117 women all through India, in 54% cases husband remarried almost immediately, while 80% women were rundown of maintenance.
Nearly 16% of women were unaware of the mehr (possessions given to the bride by the groom's family) amount fixed during the nikah and in 56% were deprived of it.
Demanding the ban of ‘triple talaq’, BMMA co-founder Zakia Soman said, “We are not in favour of uniform civil code but for reforms in the Muslim personal law and banning triple talaq will be the first step towards it.”
A legal scholar Prof Tahir Mahmood said, “horror story and reveals what havoc gross misuse of the noble Islamic law is playing in society.”
