Treating brain cancer is highly impossible, as that leads to damage of brain or even death at once. But, an interesting news story available for us that the polio virus could treat brain cancer.

According to the report of the silver ink, the researchers at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University have taken up an anti cancer research. The found that the polio virus could be used to cure patients suffering from brain tumor or brain cancer.

Generally, to treat the cancer, doctors opt surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapies. Now the researchers tried the method of age-old thought of targeting cancer. They said, “The idea of targeting cancer with viruses has been around for at least 100 years. However, valid strategies of using ‘oncolytic’ (cancer-fighting) viruses emerged only recently. This is mostly due to technological advances in genetic engineering of viruses, to work against cancers in patients, oncolytic viruses must target cancer cells for infection and they must kill them. At the same time, they must be safe. Accomplishing this is very difficult scientifically and only very few viruses are suitable as cancer-fighting agents in the clinic. We achieved this feat be genetic engineering to remove polio virus’ inherent disease-causing ability.”

They have said that the method of targeting the cancer part with polio virus would give fruitful results in near future.
