There seems to be no dearth of takers for Chetan Bhagat's novels or scripts in Bollywood, never mind even if they haven't read or heard the story. That's the kind of faith that the B-townies have on Bhagat's books that has always made for blockbuster material until now.
The latest we hear is that director Mohit Suri, who has handed out hits like 'Murder 2', 'Aashiqui 2' and 'Ek Villain,' will helm the celluloid adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's yet-to-be-released novel 'Half Girlfriend'. Whoa!
Breaking the news on Twitter, Chetan Bhagat revealed that his new book will be made into a Bollywood film by none other than Mohit Suri himself. Apparently, his upcoming novel is going to be an emotional love story about a Bihari boy, Madhav, who falls in love with an uptown girl, Riya. The movie is all about hoe English has emerged as the new class system in India. The movie will be set in Bihar, Delhi and New York.
“Delighted to announce super talented Mohit Suri @mohit11481 (Aashiqui 2, Ek Villain) will direct the film based on my next book Half Girlfriend (sic),” Bhagat tweeted on Sunday.
Chetan further said, "Mohit and I have been in touch for many years. This is a super passionate love story. He read the manuscript and was so moved that he decided to partner with me and direct this film."
Mohit too, confirming the same, said, "I liked it because of the simplicity and the identifiability with the story. The girl's character is that of a musician in the film. It's not a love story for perfect people, but it's about how normal people fall in love and how we hurt people whom we love the most. The story is so simple and yet I found myself crying in two places."
Incidentally, this will be Bhagat’s sixth novel to be made into a film. All of his past literary undertakings like 'Five Point Someone', 'One Night @ The Call Centre', 'Three Mistakes of My Life', '2 States: The Story of My Marriage' and 'Revolution 2020' have already been canned or are being canned into films.
Suri is expected to take the film to the floor by next year. The cast and crew of the film are yet to be handpicked.
