Nitish says, no Vedanta in politics

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made comments on ‘Vedanta in politics’ on the day he met President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “There should not be any vendetta in politics. In a democratic system, the mandate is given to work for the public. Public mandate is not to harass the Opposition,” he told reporters.

The comments indicate that he agrees with the Congress that political vendetta is involved in the National Herald case on the part of the ruling BJP government. Mr Kumar hoped that the Centre would keep its promise concerning Bihar package.

Answering to question on his opinion on the Centre misusing the Enforcement Directorate for political vendetta, CM said, “When the Congress is saying something it must be well thought out. I have no details. But when the Congress is saying so, it must have some meaning; otherwise why will the party say so?”

Some merit was also seen by the Trinamool Congress in the Congress’s charge. It however, refrained from detailing on the merits of the case.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of the Trinamool Congress told The Hindu, “We are not sitting in judgment on the merits of this case, which is sub judice; but from certain actions, it is clear that the government is on its feet to harass Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the Congress.”

CPI’s D. Raja took a nuanced position, saying that the functioning of the Parliament should go in the manner as it has to discuss pressing issues, told The Hindu. He added that details of Vedanta should be added by the Congress, if it felt being targeted.
