Former Supreme Court Judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose is India’s First Lokpal

Former Supreme Court Judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose appointed as India’s First Lokpal, the anti-corruption Ombudsman on Tuesday. His appointment was cleared by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The communique issued by Rashtrapathi Bhavan said “The President of India has been pleased to appoint the following as Lokpal.”

Justices Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Dilip B. Bhosale, Abhilasha Kumari, Ajay Kumar Tripathi have been appointed as Judicial members of anti-corruption ombudsman, the statement said.

Former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) chief Archana Ramasundaram, Dinesh Kumar, Dr. Indrajeet Prasad Gautam, Mahender Singh have been appointed as non Judicial members of Lokpal, it said.

Former SC Judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose, 66, retired as Supreme Court judge in May 2017. He is now a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) since June 29, 2017.

Lokpal act passed in 2013, it is the authority under the law to investigate complaints against current and former prime ministers, ministers, members of Parliament, government employees, among others.

These appointments were recommended by committee led Prime Minister Narendra Modi led panel to President Ram Nath Kovind.

The committee also includes Chief Justice of India , Lok Sabha Speaker Leader of Opposition in lower house and an eminent jurist. The  President nominated Mukul Rohatgi, a fomer attorney general as eminent jurist.

“The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices,” the statement said.
