Fire at Panaji bus stand, no casualties are recorded

A Blaze erupted early this morning around 5.45 am in the supermarket located on the ground floor of Panaji Bus stand. This fire has destroyed several other establishments including State transport department’s office on the premises.

10 to 12 tenders have rushed to the site and controlled the blaze after battling it with for more than 3 hours. Many department records were burnt in this fire.  No injuries or casualties were recorded in this incident.

This area is isolated after the fire, losses were estimated to be 1 crore, said Darryk Natto, M.D of Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited. This corporation owns and manages the Panaji Bus Stand. He said that they recently did an assessment of power load at the bus stand and they were planning to change the electric wiring in the premises.

An official of the transport department said that they are shutting down their office for next few days as many important records got burnt.

Nikhil Desai told reporters that “Two of our major sections that deal with enforcement and registration of vehicles were damaged in the fire”.

He also said, “We will have to shut down the office for another three days”.

The cause of this fire is still unknown and is yet to be ascertained. It is suspected that blaze may have started due to a short circuit in the supermarket. Most of the department has recently shifted its records to online.
