Uttar Pradesh Phase IV elections begin

In the fourth of the seven-phase election in Uttar Pradesh, 53 constituencies spread over 12 districts go to polls today. Among the 12 constituencies, five constituencies of Raebareli the parliamentary seat of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and the parched Bundelkhand zone.

This phase of the election is a high profile campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his alliance partner Rahul Gandhi and BSP president Mayawati hit the road to villages and small towns of the state. The tone of the campaign got shrill and increasingly personal.

At 7 a.m. voting began in the districts Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Banda, Hamirpur, Chitrakoot and Fatehpur.

The Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party supporters grappled at the Mahoba constituency.

In the 2012 Assembly elections out of these 53 seats in this phase, the Samajwadi Party had won 24, BJP 5, BSP 15, the Congress 6 and others 3.

During the election campaign, PM Modi targeted Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance and the BSP, accusing them of corruption. "SCAM stands for SP, Congress, Mr Akhilesh and Ms Mayawati."

CM Akhilesh Yadav referred to an advertisement of the tourism department of Pm Modi’s in Gujarat and advised Amitabh Bachchan not to “advertise for the donkeys of Gujarat".

Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav jointly held a roadshow in Allahabad. While BJP President Amit Shah held a roadshow in Sangam Nagari in Allahabad, claiming that BJP was poised for absolute majority.

Aradhana Mishara is the most prominent among those contesting in this phase of the election. The daughter of senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari from Rampur Khas; the 5 time legislator and former minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh from Kunda; BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh -- who is the grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri --from Allahabad West. The Uttar Pradesh assembly polls are being conducted in seven phases. The votes will be counted on 11th March.
