Indian-origins receive Australia’s highest civilian award

Three Indian-origin people in Australia were awarded the country’s highest civilian honor this year for their hard work and contribution in the field of medicine towards the community.

It was a moment of pride for Purushottam Sawrikar, who is a medical practitioner, received “Order of Australia” for the year 2017, which was announced on the Australia Day in General division category for his contribution to medicine and to the Indian community.

Sawrikar was the former president of Australian Indian Medical Graduates Association and was the founder of “Akashwani Sydney” a community radio”.

Makhan Singh Khangure, who is from Perth received the “Order of Australia” for his outstanding contribution to medicine in the field of “Neuroradiology”, to education and to a range of professional medical associations.

Vijay Kumar was awarded the highest civilian award for his contribution to medical research in the disciplines of nuclear medicine and biology, to professional organizations and to the community.

Vijay Kumar, a nuclear medicine specialist and a researcher, was given the award for his significant service to medical research in the disciplines of nuclear medicine and biology, to professional organizations, and to the community.

Vijay Kumar is a nuclear medicine specialist and also a researcher, he was awarded the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization Award respectively in the year 2007 and 2014.

A Darwain-based Tejinder Pal Singh was among the list of finalists in the Australian of the Year Local Hero category awards, for his efforts in improving the community.

Singh was nominated for his four-year-old initiative of providing a free-meal service called the 'food van' in the Northern Territory.
