Modi says, terrorists evolved and Governments did not

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that global terrorism has evolved over time and now a days terrorists are using modern devices and technology to connect globally. National and international efforts to counter the terrorist activities nave turned outdated. Modi spoke at a global leaders’ gathering for dinner, hosted at the White House by Barack Obama, the US President.

At the dinner, Indian Prime Minister thanked Mr. Obama for throwing spotlight on nuclear security. Modi said, “President Obama has done great service to global security.”

Modi has elaborated on his theme that terrorists evolved and Government did not. “Terror has evolved. Terrorists are using 21st century technology. But our responses are rooted in the past.” Mr. Modi said.

Identifying three contemporary features of terrorism, Modi said, “First, today's terrorism uses extreme violence as theatre. Second, we are no longer looking for a man in a cave, but we are hunting for a terrorist in a city with a computer or a smart phone. Third, State actors working with nuclear traffickers and terrorists present the greatest risk.”

PM said that terrorism has become a global problem with network across the globe, but countries still act at a national level. Modi said that there is no genuine co-operation between nations to fight terror. Deterrence against nuclear terrorism is possible only through prevention and prosecution of terrorism acts, said Modi. “Drop the notion that terrorism is someone else’s problem and that “his” terrorist is not “my” terrorist,” the PM said.

The fourth and final Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) was kick started with dinner. NSS is Obama’s initiation to coordinate efforts at international level to prevent nuclear terrorism. On Friday, more detailed discussion would happen between leaders from over 50 countries as well as four international organizations.
