Daring Congress and CPM to make official their “unholy alliance”, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the people of West Bengal will give them a “befitting response” in the upcoming Assembly elections. Left, asked Mamata to introspect, while underscoring the ruling Trinamool Congress chief’s previous alliances with both BJP and Congress.

“I heard that CPM and Congress are trying to forge an alliance. I want this alliance to be made official. The people will give you a befitting reply,” Mamata said in the Assembly in the wake of reports that Congress and CPM may join hands to defeat Trinamool.

“You people are trying to forge an unholy alliance, but we have already forged an alliance of people. We will win again with the blessings of the people and the development work we have done in last five years,” she said

“You are advocating alliance and criticising the current law and order situation. But let me remind you, more than 55,000 killings had taken place during Left rule,” she said.

“Let her see her own image in the mirror. She had tied up with the Congress, then the BJP and again with the Congress. The people know it,” Opposition leader Surya Kanta Mishra said.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “Nobody understands the need for an alliance better than her (Mamata Banerjee). She would never be able to sit on the chair she’s sitting on had it not been for her alliance with Congress. She has become afraid because she knows that the people want this alliance to throw her out of power,  this is the reality.”

Neither the Congress nor the CPM have come out in the open about the alliance, sources in both parties said an understanding has been reached. Earlier this month, the CPM’s central committee meeting had ended with party leaders saying there is a need to seek cooperation of all “democratic forces to strengthen people’s unity in West Bengal to defeat Trinamool Congress”.

“We Leftists have come together, We are asking the Congress, on which side of the fence are you? On which side are you in this fight?” Former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the Leader of the Opposition, Surjya Kanta Mishra, had publicly exhorted the Congress to join forces.
