A lawsuit has been filed against Uber cab service firm by an alleged rape survivor. The woman passenger has sued the online car service in U.S. federal court on Thursday, claiming the company failed to maintain basic safety procedures.

Shiv Kumar Yadav, a driver of Uber cab service had committed rape on a 27 year old finance executive of Gurgaon based firm on the night of December 5, 2014. The rape allegations triggered massive protests and reignited a debate on the safety of women in Asia's third-largest economy India, especially in Capital City New Delhi, which has been dubbed India's rape capital. And officials banned Uber in New Delhi following the allegations and arrest of the driver.

In her petition she called Uber the "modern day equivalent of electronic hitchhiking.". "Buyer beware - we all know how those horror movies end," the suit stated.

Uber is Valued at $40 billion last month globally and estimated to be worth $6 billion to $9 billion in India. Company promised to introduce additional safety measures including more stringent driver checks and an in-app emergency button for avoiding any uncertainties. The Delhi case is one of several around the world, including the earlier this month in Chicago, in which passengers have accused their drivers of assault.
