The Union government has sought a clarification from the Aligarh Muslim University [AMU] vice chancellor Lieutenant General (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah regarding his controversial comments on girl students visiting the library. Human Resource Development Ministry has asked the University an explanation with HRD minister Smriti Irani  calling it as an “insult to daughters.”

The issue was raised by a final year BA student and president of the newly-elected women’s student union in the presence of VC where nearly 2,000 girl students are not utlizing the provision of library. However, VC Shah made few comments, which prompted the HRD ministry for an action. “Girls had been denied access to the Maulana Azad library because "boys will flood the library if girls are allowed and there isn't enough space,” quoted Shah.

These comments were not appreciated as criticism from all corner hit the VC. Defending his statements, VC added, “We have nothing against girls, it is not that we are sexist or are discriminating against girls. But there is problem of space, of security. And the books are, after all, available to the girls. You just go online, click a button, and it is delivered next day.”
