Talk about another apocalypse and the world will smirk at you, thanks to the countless apocalypse threat that one has seen in this lifetime. But that doesn't deter astronomers from keeping an eye on asteroids — big or small — and predict a collision with Earth.

Last year October , the Time magazine had reported how a team of Ukrainian astronomers have detected a huge asteroid that is Earth-bound and could hit our planet in 18 years from now, on August 26, 2032, with a destructive power “50 times greater the biggest nuclear bomb ever detonated.

The news has been confirmed by five other astronomy groups in Italy, the UK, Spain and Russia’s Siberian republic of Buryatia. While scientists cannot guarantee that the 1,350 foot-wide rock will hit Earth. However, if it does, the explosion could equate to 2,500 megatons of TNT.

Another group of researchers studying potentially destructive asteriods said a more massive asteroid is shooting towards Earth and could blow it away on March 16, 2880.

Called 1950 DA, the rock has a diameter of 1,000 metres, and has one in 4000 chance of smashing the Earth. Currently, it's traveling at a speed of 38,000 miles per hour.

The1950 DA is rotating with gravity defying swiftness. Held together by rare cohesive forces, called van der Waals, astronomers are shocked to see that while the rock should break apart and eventually disintegrate, there are no signs of that happening.

However, there is no cause for alarm yet as in the next hundreds of years, scientists could devise methods to divert it or change its reflectivity and allow sunlight to do the work of pushing the asteroid out of the way.
