Four Indians have earned a pride of place in Fortune magazine's list of 20 extraordinary technology czars. These young entrepreneurs have been analysing data and processing big numbers and have discovered ways to "transform the way businesses operate."

These 20 extraordinary people listed in Fortune's list are "the best at connecting the dots and digging deep."

Arun Murthy, Surabhi Gupta, Swatee Singh and Vijay Subramanian are the four Indians in the Fortune's list of 20 technology czars.

Arun Murthy

Arun Murthy has co-founded Hortonworks, a computer software company. He started his career at Yahoo when Hadoop was an early prototype. Hadoop is an open-source storage and processing software, which powers most of the web’s big data.

His team took up the mission to scale it for Yahoo’s web search. Murthy helped his team to develop a system called YARN (for resource and workload management ). The system works as a type of operating system for Hadoop, according to Fotune.

Surabhi Gupta

Surabhi Gupta works as a software engineer at Airbnb, a popular travel rentals website. During her graduation in computer science at Stanford University, Surabhi Gupta became interested in the art of summarisation. It refers to deriving meaning from text without actually going through the text.

Gupta was an employee at Google when she started researching for a trip via Airbnb. She was fascinated by the possibilities offered by Airbnb's data. During her four months stint at the room rental service company, Gupta has overhauled and improved the search engine on Airbnb.

At present Surabhi is working on condensing all the listings on Airbnb to create summaries, which will help users to understand various cities.

Swatee Singh

Swatee Singh is working with American Express as the Vice President of GMS IM Platforms and Big Data Capabilities. Currently her endeavour is to make "business personal."

Swatee is credited for the American Express 'MyOffers' aiming to give members "what they want when they need it." She has also developed a tool, allowing vendors to compare their annual performance.

Vijay Subramanian

Vijay Subramanian works as Chief Analytics Officer at Rent the Runway, which is an online service providing designer dress and accessory on rent.

Subramanian developed a model to calculate the company’s inventory related to missed demand, product longevity and occasion usage. His model proved to be a huge cost-saver for the company as it purchases truckloads of dresses and accessories. The model helped the company to estimate the demand for merchandise and helped in cost cutting through orders from fashion designers meant for renting to customers.
