Images of the bustling Times Square must have fascinated most Indians. And now Mumbaikars may soon have their own Times Square like entertainment zone.

The Maharashtra tourism department has plans to develop the famous Fashion Street in South Mumbai into an entertainment hub. The state tourism department has forwarded a proposal on this to city traffic police for an approval.

If things goes as per the plan, then the system can be put in place after the requisite approval, said a senior official in the Maharashtra Tourism Department Corporation (MTDC).

Times Square, at upmarket Manhattan area, is New York's most bustling square, well known for its many movie theatres, broadway theatres and electronic billboards. The busy pedestrian area is brilliantly illuminated and a major attraction for the global entertainment industry. Every year, over 131 million pedestrians pass through theis place, which brings an annual revenue of around US$4.8 billion.

Mumbai's Fashion Street has 500 metre of street and is a tourism hub during weekends, when most of the offices in the area remain closed. The place can easily ve converted into a Times Square-like entertainment centre, said the official from the tourism department.

The area has commercial and government buildings mainly around Colaba and Churchgate. Besides, the residential apartments are few and far between in this region, added the official.

According to the plans of the tourism department, traffic would be diverted away from this area from Friday evening to the early hours on Monday. So, the VSNL building junction will be closed for vehicles by barricading the road with detachable steel poles. All traffic during weekends would be diverted to alternative routes in the area.

Fashion Street's garment stalls, the major attraction of the area for college students, will continue in the new syatem. As per plans, the area will have open sky eateries, photography cubicles, tattoo centers and other stalls related to entertainment. High resolution advertising screens could be added in the area, which would bring revenue to the state tourism department.

Mumbai's own Times Square-like entertainment area sounds quite exciting. Maximum city will definitely love it.
