BJP's top leader Arun Jaitley failed to win the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar. The BJP strategist is the only top leader who failed to ride the 'modi wave'.

Jaitley was defeated by Congress leader Amarinder Singh, who called the BP leader as an 'outsider' during election campaigns. Singh had stated Jaitley's candidature as someone who had parachuted into the city of the Golden Temple.

Jaitley, a Rajya Sabha MP, is expected to be placed in charge of a cabinet ministery. He is very close to Narendra Modi, the man who will become the next Prime Minister India.

The former Punjab Chief Minister Amrinder Singh was pitted against Jaitley by the Congress. Singh said that the Shiromani Akali Dal leadership that was disconnected with ground reality had "misled" the BJP leader to contest elections from Amritsar.

The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have formed alliance in Punjab. Together the allies are expected to win six seats. The Congress is set to win three seats.

The new player in Punjab is Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party. The lok sabha debutant is set to win four out of 13 seats in Punjab.
