Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's stepbrother Daljit Singh Kohli on Friday joined the BJP. Kohli joined the saffron party in the presence of Narendra Modi, BJP's prime ministerial candidate at a rally in Amritsar.

Daljit Singh Kohli's political move has caused embarrasment to the Congress as just a day earlier Manmohan Singh had rejected talks of a "Modi wave" to be "a creation of the media".

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) veteran and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced to the gathering at Amritsar that Kohli had joined the BJP. Narendra Modi was present on stage when the announcement was made to the crowd at Amritsar rally.

Modi was campaigning for Arun Jaitley in Amritsar, where the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha is contesting for Lok Sabha elections. Amritsar was the fourth and last rally that Narendra Modi addressed in Punjab on Friday. It was a joint BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) rally in Amritsar.

During the rally Modi welcomed Kohli into the BJP saying that Dr. Manmohan Singh's brother would increase the strength of the party. He stated that the BJP is not just a party of membership but also of relationship. BJP's PM candidate assured of close relationship in the party to Kohli.

The SAD-BJP combine expects to embarrass the Congress with the induction of Kohli into the saffron party in the middle of the general election. The alliance is hoping to overcome anti-incumbency in Punjab and defeat its rival Congress once again. The alliance has been in power for the past seven years in the state.

Punjab's 13 Lok Sabha constituency will go into polls on April 30.
