The Lokpal Bill to set up an independent ombudsman to deal with corruption charges against politicians and top bureaucrats will be discussed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The bill was approved in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday by an overwhelming majority.

The present lokpal bill has been prepared by a select committee of the Rajya Sabha with tougher provisions compared to the bill of 2011, which was passed by Lok Sabha. The significant aspect of the present lokpal is that Prime Minister of India will come under its purview, of course with some safeguards. Besides all minister as well as senior bureaucrats are covered under the proposed ombudsmen.

The Lokpal bill was taken up for legislation by the UPA government on a priority basis following a complete rout by the Congress in assembly polls held in four states and the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) successful political debut in the November assembly elections in Delhi. On Tuesday the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha following a nationwide call for anti-corruption since 2011 that started with Anna Hazare, the Gandhian activist, who went through three fasts demanding for a lokpal in the country.

Previously the Parliament has unsuccessfully tried to pass the Lokpal Bill eight times. The bills that attempted to create a lokpal for investigating corruption charges in high positions lapsed seven times and in 1985 the bill was withdrawn.
