This year, Indian Premiere League 2014 might be hosted off-shores after Indian Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that the government will not be able to provide adequate security to the game which will co-incide with the forthcoming general elections.

The new season of IPL might now be played in South Africa, like 2009, because of security concerns.

Board of Control for Cricket in India hinted in a meeting in Bangalore last week that South Africa was the preferred venue.

The decision was taken after the BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla and IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal met the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Thursday. "Government will not be able to provide security to IPL matches due to coming Lok Sabha polls," Mr. Shinde said.

The ministry asked BCCI that the Twenty20 tournament be staged in the country only after May 11, once the elections are over. With schedules packed, it would be difficult to defer IPL. Hence, the organizers have decide to hots the first month of the cash-rich tournament in the Rainbow Nation.

The shifting of IPL matches to South Africa also indicates good relationship between BCCI and Cricket South Africa officials.

So should we deem this as BCCI president N Srinivasan's way of saying "thank you" to the South Africans for voting him in as ICC chairman?

By the by, if you remember, South Africa was one of the first cricket boards to protest against the ICC revamp plans, touting the BCCI-pioneered draft proposals as "fundamentally flawed."
