The first Test match between India and South Africa might have concluded disquietingly, but the record chase that the home team put on the final day of the extraordinary match, giving Indian bowlers creeps, in Johannesburg on Sunday was totally laudworthy.

In the nail-biting final session at the Wanderers, both India and South Africa had equal chances of cinching the game, with Indians requiring just eight wickets to dismiss tail. But the Proteas put up a staggering partnership of 205-run, crashing Indian dreams of bagging a 1-0 win.

At one point of the game, it seemed the Proteas would romp home as they required just 64 runs from 16 overs with six wickets in hand. But Ishant Sharma struck again and bowled put A.B. de Villiers and Mohamed Shami dismissed J.P. Duminy before du Plessis's ran out. This propelled the Proteas to pull the shutters down and go for a draw.

The two teams will now travel to Durban, where the second and final Test is due on Thursday.
