'Nabakalebar' is an ancient ritual where the idols of the Jagannath temple (Puri), specifically Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshan are replaced by a new set of idols.

The auspicious ceremony which occurs every twelve to nineteen years has started in full-fledge this year. This grand tradition was held last in the year 1996.

The three deities are made from special Neem wood which is known as ‘Daru Brahma’.

As per the ancient mythology, Lord Jagannath is taken as an earthly form of the Supreme Being (Brahman) and therefore it is believed that he leaves the old body and enters a new one.

From practical point, deities made of stone or metal do not need any change unless damaged, but a wooden image have a life ranging between twelve and eighteen years. Hence this ceremony is conducted after a span twelve to nineteen years with all the traditional rituals.

Locating the auspicious Neem tree requires the divine intervention. As per the age old tradition, the priests of Jagannath temple (Puri) seeks the help of goddess Mangala (at Maa Mangala temple, Kakatpur). Goddess appears in their dreams revealing the site of the holy tree.

Apart from many specifications, the natural impression of conch shell and chakra (wheel) on the tree is most amazing feature required for selecting the tree.
