A new study has again proved the statement, “healthiest diet gives fit body and sharp brain”, as the researcher has found the clear implications of the Mediterranean diet on the cognitive skills of aged. It has connoted that good food is not only confined to body development, is also capable to boost the brain.

The dementia or cognitive decline can be avoided by consuming fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, olive oil, grilled or steamed chicken and seafood by limiting red meat and alcohol. The study completely focused on the middle-aged and elderly people and their lifestyle.

Nephrology specialist Andrew Smyth, who carried out the research, said,“We found higher diet quality is associated with a reduced risk of cognitive decline (and) improved diet quality represents an important potential target for reducing the global burden of cognitive decline.”

During his five-year study, 30,000 people from 40 countries participants’ thinking and memory skills were analysed at the beginning, after two years and at last. All the participants were aged 55 or older with diabetes or a history of heart disease, stroke or peripheral artery disease.

He has observed that those with healthiest diets were 24 percent less likely to have cognitive decline when compared with those consuming unhealthy foods.

The food what we take in our childhood and adulthood will show its impact in our old-age too. Making the healthy habits, including sufficient physical activities, healthy food, stress free environment, and appropriate sleep in all stages of life enables longer and happy life.
