The famous Kohinoor diamond of the British crown is not coming back to India, as the Britain minister declared that there is no legal ground for return of diamond.
The Minister of Asia and Pacific affairs of the government of the United Kingdom, Alok Sharma, indicated that probably it will never find its way to India. “As far as this issue is concerned, there is no legal grounds for restitution,” Mr. Sharma said.
In April, The Narendra Modi government had told the Supreme Court that, the diamond could not be described as stolen as it was gifted to the British by Duleep Singh, the son of legendary Sikh king Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Alok Sharma, Britain's new minister for Asia and the Pacific who is currently on a 3-day visit to India, said that, "It is the UK government's view that there aren't any legal ground for restitution of the diamond." Mr. Sharma met MEA minister of state MJ Akbar, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and also foreign secretary S Jaishankar during his visit.
India was Sharma's first port of call after he took over as minister for Asia and the Pacific. "I hope this will give a signal as to how seriously we take our relations with India," said Sharma.
