A dalit (lower-caste) groom was forced to wear helmet following an unexpected attack by upper caste villagers on Sunday. The marriage procession was heavily stoned by upper caste people while on the way to marriage venue. More than half a dozen people were in the incident which took place in Negrun village of Ratlam district.
Stating it as right conduct, the upper caste villagers told that lower caste grooms were not supposed to ride a horse and take out a procession in the village. It was against the village rules.
The groom’s father had sought police protection for safe completion of marriage.
The procession was stopped for nearly 90 minutes at the panchayat chowk. When it started again, the groom’s turban was replaced with helmet and the police members were posted on roof top so as to avoid troubles till the marriage venue.
