Filmmaker Gareth Edwards may be just one-film-old with the release of Godzilla but its success has lined up another project that would be set in a faraway galaxy. Fresh from the success of Godzilla, Edwards has been hired to direct one of the Star Wars spinoff movies.

Disney and Lucasfilm posted a statement on the official website of Star Wars that Gary Whitta (from Book of Eli) is scripting the film.

The filmmakers have plans to release the movie on December 16, 2016.

At present it's unclear as to which spinoff Edwards will direct. This is mainly due to a high level of secrecy surrounding the Star Wars projects.

There is a lot of speculation regarding the characters like bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jedi master Yoda who could be central characters in a movie. Rumours are also high on the potential Han Solo origin story or something related to the Solo clan, and on the adventures of Luke Skywalker.

After news of his deal became public, Edwards stated that after watching Star Wars he knew exactly what he wanted to do in life –  join the Rebel Alliance! He further said that he is very excited and honored to do this project with Lucasfilm.

Disney CEO Bob Iger had reportedly stated in May that they have plans to make at least three spinoff movies, besides the main installments.
