Happy New Year review

Story :

The story centres on Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) who plans a robbery of rare diamonds. Shah Rukh's character has been plotting to avenge the humiliation meted on his father, who was put in a wrong spot by Grover (Jackie Shroff). Charlie followed Grover for nearly 8 years for the momentous day when Shroff's character will continue to protect rare diamonds.

Shah Rukh forms a team and calls them Charlie’s Angels. The team will participate in World Dance Championship that will help them to steal the diamonds they want. The team comprises of a dance teacher Mohini (Deepika Padukone) who trains Nandu Bhide (Abhishek Bachchan), Jags (Sonu Sood), Tammy (Boman Irani) and Rohan (Vivaan Shah) for the championship.

The film is about a bunch of losers, who manage to steal the diamonds from the world’s safest locker.

Analysis :

Happy New Year

"Happy New Year" is a confusing mess that has its good moments. But as a total package the film fails to work. The film has a pack of talented people but in the absence of a strong storyline it becomes only bearable at times. Inspite of Shah Rukh Khan's droolworthy body and his swagger the film fails to keep you interested for three hours.

The film has a simple story, but a theme like robbery has to have a strong storyline. In the absence of a well sketched storyline, the film just doesn’t work. In fact the second hour of the film is plain unconvincing and even becomes a patriotic film. Deepika even rants off SRK’s famous Sattar minute speech from "Chak De India".

Inconsistency is the biggest problem of the film. "Happy New Year" cannot be called a revenge drama as the villain does not stand out at any time. The heist is unintelligent and unbelievable. Climax of the film is an utter waste and high in melodrama.

Performance :

Happy New Year-review

Shah Rukh Khan is the main reason for you to sit through the entire movie. He looks cool and dashing. The Bollywood Superstar's full calibre however remains unused in the film. But Shah Rukh carries off the film with a swagger.

Deepika Padukone does a terrific job in the film. She doesn’t have much screen space but her role is not restricted merely to an arm candy.

Abhishek Bachchan does a good job in the film and hams well. Inspite of ample screen presence his character is not used well in the film.

Boman Irani is brilliant in his wicked humor and endearing in his role. Farah made him enact weird antics and Irani pulled it off with finess.

Sonu Sood is wasted in the film. Other than flaunting his body, he has nothing much to do.

Vivaan Shah performed his role well and blended smoothly with the rest of the cast. He was not a misfit as was being thought.

Jackie Shroff was totally wasteded in the film. Farah could have built his character into something more meaty. Despite the menacing demeanor his character had, anyone else could have played the role.

Final Word: Go for it as an entertainment, and for Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
