20 years ago, when Sooraj Barjatya dished out his unrealistically sweet, romantic hit musical "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (HAHK), choc-a-block with Indian family values, traditions, puppy love, dance, drama, emotion, celebrations and more, little did he know that his three hour long “wedding video” would leave an indelible impression on the minds of cine goers across generations and change the way Bollywood perceived family drama for good.
A film about a family that eats together, works together, sings, dances and plays cricket together and celebrates every occasion under the sun, the film not only catapulted Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit - the lead pair - stardom to new heights, but also became one of the longest running films in Bollywood, smashing all records and inspiring a new generation of movie makers then.
As HAHK enters its 20th year today, we bring to you 20 lesser known facts about this epic family drama that we bet you had no clue about until now. Read on.
Hum Aapke Hain Koun was the remake of the 1982 hit “Nadiya Ke Paar”, also a Rajshri Productions. Although the film was a rural love story, HAHK was set in an affluent household, but carried the same essence as the original.
Acclaimed painter, Late M.F Hussain, had watched HAHK 85 times. In fact, he was so charmed by Madhuri in the film that he made her his muse. They later did a film together called “Gajagamini” which was a box-office disaster.
Madhuri Dixit was paid Rs. 27,535,729 for her role in HAHK. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress that year.
Sooraj Barjatya's HAHK is the first Hindi film to gross 1 billion at the box office. It is called the “biggest blockbuster of the modern era.”
Did you know that the popular chartbursting wedding song, “Didi Tera Devar” was inspired from Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's “Saare Nabian”? Not just that, HAHK had 14 songs, all chartbusters.
